The people of Nepal need considerable support including food, water, medical care and emergency shelter.
The foundation has supported 3 local projects since 2010. Here provides updates about our local project situation and relief work progress.
- Snowland school in Kathmandu: all 140 students are safe from the big quake on May 12th, while the school buildings were severely damaged including our new school site that was nearly completed the renovation work. Students slept outside in playground space for days due to ongoing aftershocks and unsafe buildings.
- Future Village at Katunje in Dhading: The villages were badly hit. The local government school and the school we built two classrooms are pretty much completely destroyed. So is the FV visitor centre that many volunteers shared beautiful memory staying there.. 80% of the houses were destroyed....
- Orphanage centre in Lumjung: the epicentre was in Lumping, luckily the children and most villagers we know are safe. See Change Foundation has been working with couple of international NGOs to help relief work in Lumjung.
Nepal Relief Work Progress: (update on May 17th)
1. The project co-founder Peter and 2 Indian "Engineers Without Borders" went to Kathmandu on May 6th and brought foods, medicines and building materials from Delhi to start rebuilding works. They came back safely on May 17th. Photos in below. Gham power will install rainwater harvesting tanks with UV filters in Snowland school.
2. A medical team formed by our doctor friends in Singapore headed to Nepal on May 3rd to work with a local hospital, Red Cross Nepal and the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation to render medical aid. We would donate SGD 4K to support some the medical supplies.
3. Our local trekking guide friends went up to Katunje to access the local damage for us. The villages in Kutunje were badly hit. The local government school and the school we built two classrooms are pretty much completely destroyed. So is the FV visitor centre. We brought 20 bags of rice with the priority to families with young children.
4. Barclays will match the fund raised by its Asia employees up to GBP 50K to help Nepal. We are coordinating fundraising events to help raise fund for our project and Red Cross to provide needed long term projects - total 13 events including 10 in Singapore.
5. Our project friend Zara Balfour is in touch with DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) about filming the Nepal earthquake and an update on the relief effort.
6. Our India office colleagues sponsored 40 tents and 40 mosquito nets, we aim to delivery in the week of May 20th.
